October is National Cooperative Month, which is a time to celebrate what makes cooperatives different and, more importantly, to remember who makes them possible: you, our members.
At Canadian Valley Electric Cooperative (CVEC), we don’t have customers. We have members. That distinction is more than just a change in terminology. As a member of CVEC, you have a stake in the cooperative you help support. You are part of an organization that exists to serve its members and the communities we call home.
The cooperative difference is rooted in 7 cooperative principles that guide the way we operate:
- Voluntary and Open Membership: Cooperatives are open to everyone who can use their services and is willing to accept the responsibilities of membership.
- Democratic Member Control: Cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by their members. Your voice matters, and every member has an equal vote.
- Member Economic Participation: Members contribute to and democratically control the cooperative’s capital. Any margins are used to benefit members and strengthen the cooperative.
- Autonomy and Independence: Cooperatives are self-governing organizations controlled by their members. This independence allows us to focus on the needs of the people we serve.
- Education, Training and Information: Cooperatives provide education and training for members, employees and the community. We believe an informed membership creates a stronger cooperative.
- Cooperation Among Cooperatives: Cooperatives work together to strengthen the cooperative movement and better serve their members and communities.
- Concern for Community: Cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities. At CVEC, that means investing our time, resources, and energy into the communities we serve.
So, this October, as we celebrate National Cooperative Month, we invite you to RE:MEMBER - You’re a Member. You’re not simply receiving electricity from CVEC. You’re part of a cooperative built by and for the people in the communities we serve.
That’s the cooperative difference. And that’s something worth celebrating. You can make the most of every energy dollar.
